Fibril Growth in Model Membranes

Description

Visualizing fibril growth of an artificial peptide containing two palmitoyl membrane anchors in a model raft mixture consisting of DOPC/DPPC/Chol 1:2:1. The peptide partitions only into the fluid (ld) and not into the raft (lo) domains. Growth of fibrils begins within the first 30 min after injection of the peptide solution into the AFM Tapping Mode fluid cell and fibrils are around 90-400 nm long and 1.0-4.9 nm thick. The image was taken with a MultiMode (Digital Instruments) and scan size is 4.3 µm.
