MFP-3D™ BiPolar Controller

Ideal for Homebuilt Atomic Force Microscopes

The MFP-3D Controller is the first commercially-available, all digital controller that comes standard with all MFP-3D AFM Systems. Asylum Research has made this advanced controller available to researchers that need a powerful and flexible interface to their home-built AFM.

The MFP-3D BiPolar Controller is now available in a -220V to +220V configuration. It contains all the powerful features of the standard MFP-3D Controller.

Fully Digital Means Low Noise and Easy Upgradability
• Lowest noise. Upon entering the controller, the cantilever deflection is sampled at 5MHz. All subsequent filtering and signal processing is computed digitally using high-performance IIR filters and digital lock-in technology. No additional analog stages interfere with the fidelity of the signal.

• Processing traditionally done with analog components is now done digitally with the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and Digital Signal Processor (DSP). New microscope capabilities can be added easily and quickly with firmware and software updates. See our MFP-3D controller diagram for a detailed description of the controller configuration.

• More accuracy and precision for all signals in all three axes. Our patent-pending Nanopositioning System (NPS(TM)), with sensored, accurate, closed-loop operation, allows the controller to maintain unprecedented control over the tip and eliminates distortions from hysteresis and creep.

• Front Panel access to all relevant scanning signals for easy-to-use, customized experiments, eliminates extra hardware modules and complex cabling.

• IGOR Pro software platform truly allows users to maximize their experiments with its open-ended flexibility and advanced features.

The MFP-3D BiPolar Controller is ideal for home built AFMs that want the power and flexibility for advanced experiments.

Crosspoint panel allows limitless configurations for advanced experiment programming.

MFP-3D BiPolar Controller Features Performance Benefits
Home-built AFM compatibility High voltage outputs at -220 to +220V, including X, X-bar, Y, Y-bar. Ideal for researchers wanting the power and flexibility in a controller for their home-built AFM.
Fully digital Fast, lowest noise. Operation is controlled via software. Functionality for future generation products can be added with software and firmware upgrades. High-performance IIR filters. Currently the only all-digital controller commercially available.
Crosspoint Switch/FPGA Powerful and flexible for advanced experiments. Can connect to any input or output for easy operation using software commands. No complex cabling for user experiments.
A/Ds Primary A/D with 5MHz sample rate, 16-bit resolution, 16-bit offset, and selectable gain provides high precision and high speed for the cantilever deflection signal. Additional 100 kHz inputs offer flexibility to capture ‘ride-along’ signals for custom imaging applications.
D/As Three 24-bit D/As provide scan voltages of microvolt resolution with a simple, robust architecture. Three additional outputs, user-controllable at 100 kHz while scanning, allow for experiments as complex as your imagination.
NPS System / Closed Loop NPS™ sensored, accurate, closed loop scanner operation (in all three axes) allows the controller to maintain unprecedented control over the tip and corrects for piezo hysteresis and creep.
USB-based Fast, widely available standard configuration; portable, so you can plug into other computers and laptops.
Digital Q Control Digital Q Control for quantitative phase measurements allows you to stay in attractive mode longer, even with a sharp tip or larger amplitudes. Allows soft sample imaging without sample or tip damage.
SmartStart™ Autoconfiguration of external hardware that is plugged into the controller.
DSPDirector™ Allows direct access to the DSP for advanced processing and customer experiments, with or without DSP code.
IGOR Pro Software Powerful data acquisition and analysis that is user-programmable. Software functions include built-in thermal and Sader cantilever calibration which set the industry standard. Built-in graphing, page layout and QuickTime® movie capabilities allow for publication-quality graphics.
25 Megapixel Resolution More than 25 megapixel resolution possible – limited only by computer memory.
MicroAngelo™ Nanolithography and manipulation capabilities that are standard with all MFP-3D AFMs.
